I am enjoying the slightly larger canvas. It felt like this butterfly just needed more space to spread out.
Here is another shot of a work in progress that I took about a week before I felt the painting was done. In fact, I just finished this painting two nights ago. Sometimes it is hard to know when a painting is "done," but I knew at the time that I took this photo that there was still a lot of work to be done! I will be posting the finished painting's image on my website and blog soon. Perhaps because with the turn in weather, I'm seeing less and less of them. It seems like just yesterday that I was watching so many of the last few summer butterflies dancing across the skies. Alas, winter is coming. Here are two new paintings on my easel, in the beginning stages -
Well, what can I say? Blue Jays are spectacular. From watching them, I've gleaned they are quite feisty and dignified. I know some bird watchers get annoyed with them because they're so temperamental, but I still love them. It is quite a delight to be walking through a wood, and see a quick flash of bright blue.

I found a dead monarch butterfly a few weeks ago during a walk and thought I would try my best to capture the way light shimmers through their wings. I have heard people compare their wings to stained glass windows. So, with that introduction, here is a new painting of a monarch butterfly, fresh off the easel -

I realize that I have completely neglected my blog in 2014, so I am going to post a few recent works over the next few weeks. Here is one that I had posted some photos of earlier on in various stages of completion. This one sold pretty soon after going to ArtSource Fine Art in Raleigh, NC. I liked the softness of the nest on the left. In person, this nest had a sort of soft squishy quality to it. I hope that I was able to capture the cozy nature of this nest - and I liked adding in the smaller, spikier nest on the right! They're different in size, but I think they fit well together - sometimes opposites attract, right?

The show opens February 14, and continues through May 10. I figured that a nest certainly fits into the birds theme, and this one was a pleasure to paint. I liked working on the individual twigs and bits of pinestraw in the nest, and I also really enjoyed working on the colors of the background of the painting.
The show opens 2-14-15 (Valentine's Day). In keeping with the theme, here are two paintings that I have sent to be a part of the show -

This (above) is one of my favorite birds that I frequently see around Western North Carolina. The Brown Thrasher has such personality and I LOVE the speckled breast. You can find them scratching around on the ground a lot of times in the underbrush. They have striking yellow eyes, also.

I had been paying attention to the birds in my neighborhood for quite a while before I ever saw one of these beautiful Rose-Breasted Grosbeaks. The three featured in this painting are males. The first time I saw one, I remember being struck by his milky beige beak, which contrasted the black, red, and white in a very pleasing way (in my opinion!). With the nest in the painting on the left, my eye fell for the intricacies of the bits of grass, sticks, and even small white horse hairs woven throughout. I imagined the blue and beige patterned background, based very loosely on a geometrically printed fabric.
Tonight, I decided to rework one of my paintings of a cow in a field. This painting originally had a more turquoise sky and a cooler green hue to the grass. Perhaps it is the time of year, but I wanted to brown some of the grass and mute the sky. I think I'm happy with how the painting is coming along. The photo above is a bit blurry, but you can still see the colors. Well, I have begun work on three new nest paintings. Perhaps I've been inspired by all of the bird activity around the property today - lately, I have seen Indigo Buntings, Kingfishers, Cardinals, Goldfinches, Rose Breasted Grossbeaks, and more! There is a new nest on one of the logs on the porch, and I can't wait to see little babies soon!Susanna Pantashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12978042730889356836noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6388444685622626306.post-68311749620180226772013-05-10T22:16:00.000-04:002016-11-14T17:11:46.211-05:008 Paintings Delivered to ArtSource in RaleighI have still been hard at work painting, recently delivering 8 paintings to ArtSource Fine Art in Raleigh, NC. The image above is of the painting I am currently working on, a trio of lovely bird feathers. I found the feathers on a walk through the woods last year. I know that the two largest are from a wild turkey, but I am not sure what the feather is on the right. This painting is almost finished, and it has been a lot of fun to paint. I LOVE the striped patterns & get a lot of satisfaction creating them. It reminded me of the fun I had working on this painting:
Perhaps the gray dreary weather, with the persistent rain and cold winds, is inspiring me to create some color. Below are a selection of images I have taken over these days spent at the easel. Since the last photo taken, I have spent time working on calming down the background. I know I am attempting to do something more vibrant and patterned in this piece, but I still want to maintain the feeling of calm, and I don't want this painting to be chaotic. I also started fleshing out the butterfly on the right hand side a little more, and adding detail to the wings on the bottom swallowtail. Those tiny dots are a lot of fun!Susanna Pantashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12978042730889356836noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6388444685622626306.post-69001587524804375502012-11-01T00:46:00.001-04:002012-11-01T00:46:52.391-04:00"Contemplation: Ocean Whisperings"

This afternoon, I focused on the color gradations on the bottom butterfly. I also did a few adjustments to the colors of the scarf.

Next time I work on the painting, I will probably start adding many of the beautiful blue specks of color that show up against the black wings on the bottom butterfly, and refining some of the edges. I haven't begun to really tackle the butterfly in the top right, and the top left butterfly has a ways to go. These middle stretches of the painting, it can be an exercise in self-discipline!Susanna Pantashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12978042730889356836noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6388444685622626306.post-75079900084812701322012-08-05T01:33:00.000-04:002012-08-05T01:36:19.084-04:00New directionHere is a glimpse at a new painting I have recently started. Sort of a different direction, with more color and patterning. We'll see...
Oh, also... Here is another painting I have been working on for a while, of a shell. This one is almost finished, but not quite. Below are some of the photos I have taken during the process.
Just finished this little painting from my Contemplations series the other day. Another artist friend asked me the other day if I feel like I have gotten tired of my nests and small objects. In a nutshell: no. ;) I love painting these quiet canvases, and I don't know if I will ever tire of them.
I went to Hampton House Art & Framing in Winston-Salem, NC, and ArtSource Fine Art in Raleigh, NC. Unfortunately, I forgot my camera while I was at Hampton House, but I remembered it by the time I got to Raleigh!
