Hmmm... Interesting question. I think I chose gray as a background because I thought that the coolness of the background was nice against the warm tones that were in the shell itself, the burgundy and peach colors. Initially, I had a much darker bluer background, but I didn't like how it was turning out, so I lightened it. I think it made the painting a little softer. Also, I just like neutral colors. Does that make sense? Sometimes I hesitate on colors and initially have something totally different in mind. By the end of the painting, it looks much different - I sort of go with the flow I guess!
Contemporary realism with the occasional surreal twist. Nature is a theme often present in my work, as I finds much inspiration from the natural world.
